Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! I wanted to let you know that today I was also sharing a layout on The Crafty Maven Getaway Youtube Channel.

I love Free Flow Wednesday because it’s a chance to scrap my style and have fun. I love how on this day that channel showcases so many different kinds of styles and ways to express through scrapbooking!!

Take a look at the blog post I wrote about my layout, on The Crafty Maven Getaway blog.

Here are some close ups of my layout.

The cut file I am using came from The Cut Shoppe. I love how it lets the paint peek through.

March Clique Kits Pep Rally

Aloha My Scrappy friends!! It’s that part of the month when Clique Kits does their monthly blog hop and design team members and other crafters who get Cliques share some of the things are creating with their monthly kits. The March kit this month is the “Hell Yeah” and is packed with tons of exclusive goodies. I have really been enjoying using this kit which features Studio Calico Seven Paper Goldie designed by Ashley Goldberg. If you are following the Pep Rally Blog Hop then Welcome to my blog. You probably came from Kim’s blog, if after reading my blog post you want to continue the hop there is a list at the end of the post with the whole line up. You will end up at Charity’s blog!!

Here is a quick look at the “Hell Yeah” March Clique Kit.

For the layout I made for the hop I decided to go back and use the circles from the cut file that is available to download with you kit. Each month with your Clique kit, there are free cut files and printables. They are always fun and coordinate with the month’s kit perfectly!! Earlier this month I made a layout with their circle cut file. I had tons of smaller circles leftover, and I really didn’t want to throw them out.

I decided to cover about 2/3 of the layout with these circles. I tried to eyeball them but get them mostly evenly lined up.

For the bottom 1/3 I used the peachy pink stripe from the paper add on. I really hadn’t touched my paper add on and there is some really fun and pretty papers, mostly from Photoplay. They are pretty girly so I knew it would be perfect for a layout about my daughter Leilani.

Many of the 3X4 cut parts have encouraging words or phrases, also perfect for Leilani. I picked the one that said, “With brave wings she flies”. the cut apart/journaling card was in a gorgeous teal color too. a good contrast to the blue in the pattern from the circles up above.

In our kit we also had this really fun gold and silver crape paper. I really wanted to use that. I love all the texture it could give to my layout. I made a fan out of each color twice. I pieced them together in a semi circle. There was a gold and silver piece together. I tucked them one each side of the photo, knowing that I would add some other goodies with them.

I love how it, looks peeking out from under these hand cut flowers!!

I handout some of the floral clusters for embellishments and layered elements on my layout. I tucked them around the crape fans and near the bottom of the 3×4 card. some of the flowers I added pop dots for dimension.

I also cut some of the hearts out of one of the other patterned papers in the kit. These tiny hearts were perfect to mix with the exclusive die cut embellishments. I used one of the journaling tags with the fans.

I used the roller phrase stamp for a fun detail on the background near my clusters. The black ink really pops.

I used the other cut file with marque words for part of my title. I used a darker pink patterned paper so it would add contrast with the circles on the background. I also used some gold glitter thicker words for my title. I wanted more gold on the layout since I had gold with the crape fans.

I finished my title with the black alpha stickers that matched with the Goldie collection from Seven Paper. I love this font, it is just so much fun and the perfect size. I added this under my photo, to flow down the whole layout.

There is my classic layers behind the photo, which is also on pop dots. I finished the layout with Heidi Swapp gold and hot pink Color Shine. I journaled on the back of my layout, since it would have been really hard to see handwritten journaling on the front. Plus I wanted to write something sweet to my daughter. With this being in our family album I figured it would be nice to have some journaling that is hidden, and not everyone would read. Something just for her. Because she is so special, strong and brave. She gives me so many reasons to smile!

Here is a look at my finished layout.

You can also watch the process video I made to go with this layout.

I hope you have been enjoying this blog hop so far. I love seeing all the inspiration that all the crafters share during the pep rally. It always gives me a boost to get up and create something!! I hope you continue on and check out Charity’s blog!!

My Heritage Series: Grandma Cook and her always fabulous Chocolate Chip Cookies

Aloha Scrappers!!

This video is up a little late today. I am finally able to upload videos on a regular basis. and boy it feels good. I hated being so far behind, or not even having anything to share with you.

My Family Heritage series, is so dear to me, because it’s all about my family. It is also part of the main reasons I scrap, to tell my family stories. I don’t think it matters if you are telling stories from current or a hundred years ago, these stories are helping to create and make your family who they are. I love seeing this journey of how we got to where we are now.

This genealogy journey is often rough, no pictures for the stories we want to tell or no stories for the old bad quality photos we do have. This is a struggle.

The layout I am sharing was a fun one to make and mostly because of the story behind it. Last summer my family had a family reunion and tons of photos were shared. When my family shared a bunch of these photos with me, they started telling me a little about some of the photos. Most photos, I didn’t get much info, except this one of Grandma Cook.

All everyone could remember about Grandma Cook was that she always had amazing Chocolate chip cookies at her house to give out to whoever was over at her house. Then they mentioned Grandma Cook wasn’t even in our family.

I wonder if that is even her real name?! This is what I love about family history, is that somewhere in our photo boxes we have photos of the people in our lives. These stories are remembered and then these people become part of our family too. Sometimes these are some of families most told stories.

These stories are hidden gems to me as a historian, even if it doesn’t really tell use much about anything. Except that this person was loved by everyone in my family. She must of had a nice and loving personality.

When I made this layout I was in the middle of my mojo funk. So I admit this is not my favorite layout in my album. I am ok with that though, because I still love the story I tell on this layout.

I started with some mixed media. I used spray on the background and used a straw the blow the ink splatters. I like how this creates an unique pattern overtime you do it. The soft pink I used helps tone down the craziness this technique can have. FullSizeRender.jpg

I also added a little copper acrylic paint as well. I used a very pretty paper from Pink Paislee  as a reverse border on my layout.

I layered some of the papers from the C’est La Vie Collection, Hello Love Collection, as well as some vellum from Webster’s Pages (that was in my stash). I was going for that country flowery feel. IMG_5183

I used tons of ephemera pieces and frames. IMG_5184

I clustered a few embellishments at the bottom of my layout, under my title.

I also liked tucking some things in my layers for interest.

For the title I mixed Thickers with embellishments with words on them along with other alphas. I really love this mish mash of different fonts and colors in the title, for a layout like this. I think it adds to the idea of collecting things.

And don’t you just love those gold glittery Thickers!! They are my Fave!!

Here is a look at my process video.

Thanks for joining me!! I hope you were inspired today. I hope you are inspired to tell a fun story for your album and your family to see throughout the years!!

What a bunch: March Clique Kits Guest Designer

Aloha!! For Valentine’s day/Mother’s Day my Hubby got me a new DSLR Camera. And let me tell you I am in LOVE!!

I am trying to take shots all the time. So the other day when my kids were hanging on the back of the swing we have outside on our patio i decided to try to get a few shots.

I love the look of photos having fun playing, even if they are slightly posed. after trying to get a couple pics of the kids doing their own thing, I told them to get close so I could get a “good” she of them all together. I can often get individual shots of them easily, but a really nice photo together is often hard.

The girls were happy and in the mood and willing to smile nicely for me. Maybe they are realizing if they comply to my request I will let them go back to playing. Samuel on the other hand just wasn’t into sitting so close to his sisters and giving me a smile.

In fact here are a couple of shots I got of him before I made them get close.

This one isn’t too bad, at least he is semi smiling while sticking his tongue out!!

This one would have been better if he wasn’t to far forward.

Because I am learning to use this amazing fancy camera, I am keeping these shots even though they aren’t perfect.

By the time I made them all sit together close Sam just wasn’t into giving me a good smile.  This is very much his personality right now. Always trying to be goofy and getting a laugh. If he has to be serious life isn’t very fun. For a four year old this is extremely important too.

Here is a shot I took after I got the one I used for my layout.

He really doesn’t look happy in this one, He looks almost ready to fight!! LOL!!

At least the girls look cute and happy!!

Since I gabbed so much about my adventures in photo taking with children I will just share a few close ups of my layout. I really love how it turned out and how the photo is the focus of the layout.

I used the March Exclusive Cut File from Just Nick. I love all the circles. And adding the heart paper behind some of the circles really make it fun.  I also used my silhouette to cut out a title with white card stock. I love how having a silhouette I can customize a title and have it all match too.

I tried to keep my embellishments simple. I layered a few of the 3×4 cut apart cards to layer. I the colors and patterns add to the layout, without be too busy.

I love the touch of glitter and gold adds to this layout. This Maggie Holmes Thicker word and shape pack really matches well with the Goldie collection that is used in the March “Hell Yeah” Clique Kit.

I added some black Heidi Swapp Color Shine at the end of my layout.

The silver crape paper adds a fun element and adds a nice place for my photo to sit.

Here is a look at the full Layout.

I also have a process video on my Youtube Channel. You can watch my video below.

Ramblings of a scrapbooker

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! I have tons to share with you!! Thus the title Rambling, which I am really good at, by the way.  First off, I am really excited because for the month of March I am the Guest Designer for Clique Kits!! I love Clique Kits, the owners so amazing. Plus the products and kits they offer are super fun. I have been subscribing to Clique Kits for about a year now, and I am never disappointed when I get my kit in the mail! To share my work with their kit on their blog, is so incredible!! Keep a look out on my Youtube Channel and here for the layouts I have made with their “Hell Yeah” March Kit.

As many of you may have heard I made a trip to the US mainland unexpectedly. I had not been to New York (which is where I went to see my family) in about 6 years.  It was quite a culture shock for me, to be back in the country with little internet and spotty cell phone service. To tell you the truth, I was going a little crazy without Youtube!! I did very much enjoy seeing all my family though. It was just what I needed.

Before I left I was really struggling with finding mojo. I would sit to create and nothing would come. I think my focus just wasn’t in the right place. It is always a struggle to stay connected to the community and find new inspiration to create. I want to be more productive so I need to spend more time off social media and more time, creating, editing and blogging. The editing, blogging and organizing of these things things tend to drain my creative side too though. And I have been having a hard time finding the balance in it all. I am such an social person too, I think my lack of interaction in the community was a big part of my mojo issues.

I wish I could give some advice as to all the things that work to stay on track and create and be productive, but I am so human that I just have to tweak things each week, and try again the next week. I will say having a routine of things that I do everyday does help. But that is me, and I know routine and schedules can kill mojo in some people too.

I am learning this year that “Intention’ is something you need to keep in mind throughout the day, the week and on a regular basis so that you are aware of the things that need to change and things that are working. I hope that by the end of the year I will have tweaked or ironed out my routine and what works more for me. Or I could learn that in the end if I am having fun and meeting deadlines that need to be met, why stress out about it.

I am working this week to get back into a regular Youtube posting schedule. I am still hoping to post 3 days a week. Then add things as I have certain Design Team posting too. This three postings a week I believe means that I can make extra layouts for upcoming projects or just to be a little. I also have time to have down time to have fun.

My next rambling has to do with pictures!! Lets talk a little about this. One thing I realized while I was gone is that I need to focus on more picture taking. Sometimes I feel like the worst picture taking scrapbooking. I don’t take pictures everyday. There sometimes are weeks where I take a couple pictures all week, besides pictures of layouts that I have made.

As a scrapbooker pictures and stories are the two most important keys to what we do. I need pictures to scrap and I need to tell my families stories. If I don’t take the time to focus on these two things, I can’t make layouts.

I also am the kind of scrapbooker that needs to be inspired by the photos or stories that I am going to put on a page. If i am not connected in some way to these two elements my layout suffers.

Being so focused on the back end of the creating process I had lost focus of the most important thing to what I love to do. And I had became so caught up in things I didn’t even realize that this was the case. Thats bad, really bad. I am so glad I could take a step back and refocus my camera lens of life!! I really love being a memory keeper. I love capturing the moments in our lives that hopefully will mean so much more later in life. Even if it’s just a cute smile, or something we do everyday.

My goal this month is to take more photos. Taking photos with more intent too. I really want to think about the stories I haven’t told that I want to see/read about later, and take pictures that can help tell those stories. My kids are at that age that the are growing so fast. I really want to remember and tell the story of their childhood while we are living it. Then they can look back later and see who they are.

I also realized if I don’t take those extra few minutes to take a picture I may not have time later to do it. I have to take the time to capture what inspires me. It was so hard to be back home in New York and not be able to stop every five minutes to capture things like hay bails and cows, and old brick farmhouses. The fact that my time was limited back home and in order to spend time with those that I love I couldn’t take the time to take all the photos I wanted felt so crappy. But I realized it really is a choice, either I take those extra minutes or I enjoy the time I have. Coming back to Hawaii I really have tried to take time to get a few extra shots with my camera.

Thanks for sticking around for my ramblings!! I hope you are having a productive week, or at least fun week.

Can’t wait to chat with you some more about scrapbooking journey!

Aloha, Hannah

I used one of the 3×4 cards as part of my title.

This exclusive flair matches the poison sumac, so I needed to use it!!

I layered the die cuts with my paper layers.  I love the way the background turned out as well. I definitely altered it to make it look like a new paper.

Free Bird

Aloha My Crafty Friends!! After a brief unexpected time away from Youtube, I am finally back. And ready to scrap and share with you all the things that have been going on.

Truth be told I had been having serious mojo issues. The creative juices just weren’t flowing and it was hard. I wanted to scrap and nothing was coming.

When I sat down to create this layout, I decided to just have fun. Not scrap an important story but play. I often look at Pinterest, like many scrappers do. I had been seeing lots of watercolor stripes, on a Wilna layout and others. I decided to go with that. I think many times I put the pressure on myself to always come up with something new and fresh. I forget it is ok to use the inspiration and ideas of other scrappers who are sharing. I know for me, that is part of why I share to help inspire.

I used my favorite Tim Holtz reinker color, cracked pistachio, to create a watercolor paint. I used a big brush that holds lots of water. I really like the look that gives, it really helps it look like a watercolor instead of a spray ink. The color is light and dreamy. All I did next was paint stripes. I did let some of the color splatter on the page too. It is really simple but gives the page (which is white card stock) an artsy feel.

The picture I wanted to scrap isn’t this great amazing story. I think that’s why it was easier for me to scrap though. I also think sometimes when your mojo is away on vacation, scrapping your favorite pictures or stories is tough. We want them to be perfect. Now if scrapping great photos is what inspires you, yes scrap them. I just find find taking the pressure from telling a really important story helps. It helps me get into the groove.

This picture isn’t amazing, but this is where the fun in my story is. This is a picture of a peacock from the Dole Plantation. The peacocks room all over there, and can make for a really cool picture. They are such pretty birds. This bird though did not want his picture taken. He would have his feathers all out and I would try to take his picture he would start grooming himself, and turn. It was frustrating too. This is the story I am telling on this layout. Gotta love animals, they don’t care we want great shots for a scrapbooking layout.

He still looks pretty I admit though.

IMG_0003The Pink Paislee C’est La Vie collection has tons of frames, I layered some of them with a tag from Fancy Pants Happy Place.  I actually tried to keep the embellishments light.

I used bits of chipboard, phrase stickers and those amazing sequin hearts from the Maggie Holmes Shine collection.

I ended the layout by adding gold splatters and outlining the layout to give the layout that artsy look.

I actually really like how this turned out. It also helped me want to create more. I love how that happens when I take the pressure off and I end up finding my groove.

Here is the process video from my Youtube Channel.

I hope you, my scrappy friends have a great weekend. I hope you find the moments to feel inspired to tell the story of your life!!

Aloha, Hannah
