Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!

Have you heard?! Some youtube friends (Christy’s Beautiful Life, Crafty Meggy, and Katty Miranda) and I are going to be starting a new youtube series called Mojo Busters starting next Friday, November 4th. This is going to be a five part mini series, where we are going to be tackling this concept about the lack of creativity in our craft room.

Many of us go through periods in our year, where we are too tired, too busy or lack the motivation to scrap. Worse yet, sometimes we spend all this time creating and don’t love what we make. It happens to all of us at some point in our live, maybe more often than we like. But the key is to figure out quick and fun solutions to help us when we feel this way.

I hope you join us on this journey of sharing some fun challenges we like to do to help spark that creativity to create.

Here is a video explaining my take on this series, and what I hope to focus on.

Guest Designer for Shimelle

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!

I have something really exciting to share with you today. I was asked to be a guest designer on Shimelle’s blog today!! I absolutely love Shimelle and her stuff. The first class I ever took was a Shimelle class and it completely changed my life and scrapbooking. I went from a scrapbooker who was new and still very unsure of herself to realizing that I could put a page together without a sketch and it look really good. My scrappy self esteem was lifted. As a new scrapbooker you really need that lift in order to keep going and keep creating.

Anyway enough of my yapping, which I have a tendency to do.Let’s get to my layout.

I absolutely love making cupcakes!! I love eating them even more. And what goes even better with a cupcake is coffee. Maybe I a little addicted to coffee and cupcakes together?! A few years ago a stopped using box cake mixes and starting making my own cupcakes from scratch. I will never go back. They taste so much better. Now that my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, making cupcakes healthier has been even more of a passion of mine. So I make a lot of cupcakes now. My family hasn’t protested yet! I am not sure they will either, they love them almost as much as I do.

Because I bake so much I take way more pictures of my cupcakes than I probably really need. I just can’t help myself. I want to remember just how good each cupcake tastes. this leads me to the layout I made.

It was inspired by this photo of some chocolate and almond butter cupcakes I made. I am completely in love with almond butter this fall ( I even made some from scratch, talk about YUMM). The cup in the picture is a new cup I bought this late summer. It’s so pretty. The circles on the cup, inspired me to try to replicate that on a layout. I mean, what is the worst that could happen?! I waste two hours of my life or I could get something looking really awesome! To my luck it turned out fantastic. I hand stitched a hand full of circles that I used to cut some white card stock in. I then cut out some circles from the Museum paper in the Go Now Go collection and layer them. Some circles got some dimensional foam to add height to them. It is a labor of love, but very much worth it. All the texture and dimension you get from this is awesome.

I used that same white silhouette cut card stock that I used for the circles. I used this as my background doing some mixed media with some acrylic paint in copper and my pencil eraser with teal paint. I backed this paper with a patterned paper from Cocoa Vanilla Studios. I really thought the light black circles made the mixed media and hand stitched circles pop.

This is one way that really helps dimension by using contrasting colors on a layout. The red really pops against the teal and copper colors. Since I took so much time hand stitching them I really wanted your eye to go directly to them throughout the page.

I used lots of layers under my photo. I chose to use colors that were already on my layout. It was easy since I used papers from both the Go Now Go and the Starshine collection. Using a collection together helps because you know that the colors and patterns will already match or work together. This takes a lot of the thought out of layering. Just pick a paper and start layering. I added a silhouette cut file of leaves at the bottom of my layers. I love the pieces of leaves barely peeking out from the bottom.

 I added foam and pop dots in between my layers to help keep them separated causing shadows. I like to add the pop dots in after I already taped my layers together so I can lift just part of the paper. This really helps to see all the layers and adds dimension and interest to the photo.

I added a crape paper banner to the right side of my photo. By fanning the banner it creates lots of texture and shadows and lifts off from the page. This mixed with some thread and a little paper clip draws your eye up to my title. Which I used the Teal Glittered Fitzgerald Thickers. I added them right to the photo. That area of my photo didn’t really need to be completely visible so I didn’t mind it being there. The other part of the title was down on the left hand side of the photo, near the cupcake. I really wanted that to be the focus. I added an epoxy metal clip from the StarShine Collection for another circle element. I added some more thread mixed in the layers from a piece of pink ephemera. Don’t forget I added pop dots throughout my layers which really help the different layers in that bottom cluster stand out.

  I had a long title, some of which I have under my photo. I used my silhouette to cut out Best Together in the Phoenix paper from Starshine. That color just pops. I laid it on top of a coffee cup die cut piece I had in my stash from Pretty Little Studio. I have a hard time doing a coffee layout without a coffee cup. I added a wood button to the end of the title, almost like a period. I like the addition of the wood throughout, adding different size heights around the layout.

When it comes to adding layers and dimension to my layouts I find that practice makes perfect. You try and try again and eventually you get a result that looks awesome. Knowing when to stop is also an important step too. For each scrapbooker that point is different too. There is no right or set number of layers and bits that needs to be added to get great results. I think that playing around and doing it often helps you find that sweet spot.

For me I think adding the Tinsel Heidi Swapp color shine was maybe a bit overboard. All the media and the bits of enamel shapes from the Go Now Go collection, really was enough. Adding sprinkles of color shine is always my last step to finishing a layout. I added them, maybe if I could go back I would have left it off. I just know having some color shine to tie everything together really does make an impact.

I wrote journaling right on my layout. In my album I am going to print off this recipe for the cupcakes I made, they were amazing and I want to be able to make them again. I will put them in a 8 1/2 x 11 protecter next to my layout. Here is that recipe if you want to try them out. ( I will warn you though, once you eat a homemade cupcake you may not want to eat a box cake mix again).

Here is that yummy recipe for these cupcakes!!

Chocolate, Almond Butter and chocolate chip cupcakes with an old fashioned milk

and cinnamon almond/peanut butter frosting.

ingredients:

2 cups Ap Four
1/2 cup coconut flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup stevia in the raw sweetener
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup almond butter
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup room temp coffee
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
1 3 oz package of chocolate instant pudding (unmixed)
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup chocolate chips (I like the Ghirardelli brand, in a darker chocolate)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line cupcake pans with liners and set aside.
  2. Mix together all dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, spices and pudding

    mix) and set aside.

  3. Mix together Vanilla, milk and coffee together and set aside.
  4. In mixer add butter and almond butter with sweeteners (both sugar and

    stevia) and blend until well mixed.

  5. Blend in each egg separate into the sugar butter mixture. Scrap sides of

    bowl to make sure it is well mixed.

  6. Add 1/3 of the dry ingredients into the egg, sugar, butter mixture. Mix

    until just incorporated then add 1/3 of the wet ingredients. Mix until just

    incorporated then scrap side of the bowl.

  7. Do step 6 until all the ingredients are incorporated together well.
  8. Add chocolate chips (if you like more chocolate chips you can certainly add

    maybe a 1/2 more, I like to keep the sugar content down). Mix batter for

    about two minutes until fully incorporated.

  9. Scoop batter into the cupcake tin. (I like to use a 1/2 cup Ice cream scoop

    to make sure all my cupcakes are roughly the same size) Try not to overfill

    the cupcake tin, the cups should be about 3/4 full.

10. I get about 18 to 24 cupcakes per batch depending on the amount of

batter each cupcake.
11.Bake cupcakes for about 20 minutes. They are done when you touch the top

and it springs back up, or a toothpick inserted comes out clean. 12.Let cool before Frosting.

Old Fashioned Milk and Almond/Peanut Butter Frosting

Ingredients:

1/8 cup ap flour
1/8 cup coconut flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup milk
1 stick butter (4 oz) (I like to use butter flavored crisco instead of butter)
1/4 cup almond butter
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 Tbsp mascarpone cheese
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup stevia sweetener
2 tsp Vanilla extract

  1. In a saucepan on medium heat toast flours and cinnamon together on stovetop.
  2. Slowly whisk in milk, making sure it doesn’t clump. You want this to be smooth or you will have chunks of flour in your frosting. (you are making a basic pudding without the sugar.
  3. Cook on stove until it has thickened. You want it decently thick because it needs to hold up with all the wet ingredients in the frosting. When thickened take of stove and let it cool down, stirring occasionally so it doesn’t get a film on the top.
  4. In a mixer blend butter, almond butter, peanut butter, and mascarpone cheese with the sweeteners. Mix until mixed well.
  5. (If you just want to use straight up almond butter you can or even just peanut butter. I do a mix because almond butter tends to be more runny than peanut butter. Also my family isn’t big of almond butter. )
  6. Add Vanilla to the butters and sugar mixture.
  7. Mix in the cool thickened milk and flour mixture. Mix for about 5 minutes

    until fully incorporated and fluffy.

  8. Frost cupcakes (I like to use a frosting bag to frost my cupcakes.)

Bakers Note: All the stevia sweeter can be switch out to real sugar without much change to the recipe or taste.

Homemade Pumpkin Soup Recipe

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! I thought it would be a fun idea to share my recipe of Pumpkin Soup since earlier I shared a layout I made about this yummy bowl of Autumn goodness.

This soup may have started from an actual site, but over time I have kinda tweaked it to my family and my preferences. Little things like adding Ground Smoked Chipotle powder add a nice smokiness that mixes well with the smell of crisp and fallen leaves.

Adding farm fresh roasted Butternut Squash is a newer addition and really helps enhance the pumpkin flavor. I love using fresh ingredients to my families meals to help keep the costs down, but also support local businesses and farms in my area.

Here is a reminder of what this yummy soup looks like all done.

Here is the recipe, which makes a nice big pot full. ( On a side note when I made this the other day, per cup, so 8 oz, this bowl of soup has about 10 grams of carbs. This is a very healthy soup with tons of vitamins and fiber and little sugar.)

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients:
1 TBSP Coconut Oil
2 TBSP Butter
2 Celery Stalks, finely chopped
1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
3 TBSP AP Flour
2 TSP Poultry Seasoning
2 Tsp old bay seasoning
2 fresh Bay leaves
Salt to taste
Papper to taste
About 28oz can Pumpkin Pureed (plain pumpkin)
2 Tsp Hot Sauce (Chipotle Chili powder 1 Tsp) (Optional)
6 cups Chicken Stock (I also like a 1/2 chicken, 1/2 beef broth mix)
2 cups Heavy Cream (or milk)
1/2 Tsp Nutmeg
Optional 3 cups pureed Butternut squash

Relish:
1 apple chopped
1/4 red onion finely chopped
2 TBSP lime juice
pinch of Lime Zest
1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped
1/2 Tsp ground Cinnamon
1 Tsp Chipotle Chili Powder
2 TBSP honey
1.  Heat Soup pot to med high Heat, Add oil and butter.
2. Add and saute onion, celery and carrot. Add Bay leaf and Saute for about five or so minutes.
3.  Season Veggies with Salt and Pepper. Add Poultry seasoning, Old Bay, Chili powder and hot sauce. Cook for another 5 or so minutes until veggies are tender. Stir often from sticking.
4.  Add flour and cook for a couple of minutes. You want the flour to get a little color. This helps develop flavor.
5.  Whisk in Chicken Stock and Bring to a boil.
6.  Whisk in Pumpkin puree in large spoonfuls (If you are adding roasted Butternut Squash puree add it here like pumpkin.) Incorporate Pumpkin really well.
7.  Simmer soup for 10 minutes to thicken.
8.  Add Cream and Nutmeg.
9.  Reduce heat to low and keep warm until ready to serve.
10. Make relish. Combine all relish ingredients and mix. Add relish to the top of the soup in bowl.

SpiegelMom Scraps What About Wednesday: Pumpkin Soup

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!!

I hope you October has been going well? Mine has been flying by, I feel this way every year. The days fly by and before we know it, it will be Christmas :0

In hopes of slowing down I am still scrapping Autumn. Plus I just can’t seem to get enough of all the cool tones, glittering frost, and cozy fussy socks. I may be over scrapping Autumn this year but I am loving every minute of it!!

This week I am sharing a new project I am starting over at the SpiegelMom Scraps Blog.

I am making a Cozy themed 8 1/2 x 11 album, where I am making layouts of Autumn and Winter things that center around cozy. I am adding recipes and other traditions we have at our household that we mainly do in the Autumn and Winter months.

Double Vision: Day In The Life Part One

Aloha!!

Double Vision Series is a scrapbooking process video series where I scrap double page spreads in my own style. I use different kinds of inspiration to start the spread, to make it a little unique.
I am making a time line of my Day In The Life I joined in on on July 2016. I am taking all my photos and arranging them on a multi page spread to create a time line that you can see and follow.

Day In The Life is a way of documenting a day. It was started by Ali Edwards. You can read more about this project at her site here, http://aliedwards.com/projects/day-in-the-life

I am really excited to document my day for this round of Day In The Life, because it is the first full day in our new house. I know in years to come this will be really fun and cool to look through. Especially since many of the moments from that day and the days surrounding it were super crazy and busy.

I decided to share my layout spread in two videos. This first video goes through my first page.

This is the second process video for the second page of this spread.

Next Saturday I will share the last two pages. I will also share next week on my blog a run through of all my pictures from that day so you can see better pictures of my day than just what you see with my process video. (I know sometimes it’s hard to see all the images on layouts in a process video, especially with all the photos I have on my spread.)

I am really glad to share this especially with a new Day In The Life date this week coming up. How are you planning on documenting your Day In The Life this time if you are doing it? I still haven’t decided exactly the focus I am doing. I think maybe focusing on the senses since so many things are still so new around here, that might be kind of fun. Things like the smell of the fireplaces smoke in the morning from our neighbors’ houses. Or the taste of salty peppery sausage in creamy gravy on dinner.

Double Vision Series: Strong Women

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!

For a little over a month I have been doing a double page layout series on my Youtube Channel. I have never been big on doing double page spreads. Doing this series, has helped me to focus differently on my layouts. To think ahead of time instead of just go with the flow.

This week I wanted to make a layout where I could focus on journaling. With the double page spread as my canvas I knew that would be a great space to have lots of journaling.

A while ago I did a double page layout where I had a huge title, I took that as my inspiration. I loved how it looked to have a long title that was a poem quote in many different kinds of fonts. I knew that would look cool on this layout combined with lots of journaling.

Since I do lots of ancestry research I love seeing what someone looks like on paper, through documents. But it is sometimes hard to really know their true motives behind all the decisions these papers show. The places they lived, the jobs they had, these are all part of the story, but why they do things is really the true meaning behind the story. t’s these stories that I want to tell on my pages. I want my kids and grandkids to one day look back and see all the traits of the people in our family!!

That is how the idea got started for this double page spread. A spread about my grandmother and the strength she has passed down. A trait I am positive she had gotten from her mother too.  That has been passed down to me. I want my kids and grandkids know that this is such a great a positive trait to be given!!

Thankful

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!

I am sitting at my dining room table this morning. The kids are eating breakfast and watching Teen Titans, btw the theme song makes me want to watch Freaks and Geeks. That makes me chuckle.

I am eating my current favorite breakfast of toasted english muffin with peanut butter (I would rather have almond butter but we are too poor to buy that right now) and Tillamook Farmstyle Greek Yogurt with my coffee with eggnog. Yes, it’s eggnog season here now. And that means everything in my household. I think my family could live on Eggnog. The minutes it leaves the store after the holiday season it’s a sad day and the kids are asking when it is Thanksgiving again. (Because in Hawaii you really can’t get eggnog until the week of Thanksgiving)

My fingers are freezing, from taking the puppy outside this morning. It is currently cloudy, just finished raining and chilly outside. Autumn is really here. It is time to put away the shorts tank tops and flip flops. We aren’t in Hawaii anymore.

But then I look around and my kids are happy (and not fighting with each other, which means something in this house!!).  My coffee is hitting the spot, how could it not with eggnog in it?!

I peak at my beautiful scrap room (even though at the moment it is warming up) with fresh cut flowers from my years. I can’t believe that my Dahlia’s are still blooming. I cut three yesterday and there are about 6 or 7 that are almost ready.

The sight of my room makes me smile. It is my happy place. I really should think about playing in there in a minute. Especially since no one needs me.

But I am really just thinking about how Thankful I am this morning. Thankful for trees that have beautiful colors on them.

It has been 7 years since I have been able to enjoy the things I love the most about Autumn.

I am Thankful for food in our fridge, and heat that is coming from our vents. I am thankful for a Husband who works crazy hours and long hours so we can have all the things we need and some things I just want for fun.

I am Thankful for Friends, and waking up to Vox messages to listen too. And chatting with friends on Facebook. Friends from all over the world.

I am thankful for this beautiful house we house we own, (well technically the bank owns it until it’s paid off). Thankful for a yard my kids can run around in and my puppy can dig holes in. A yard I can plant all the flowers and Apple trees I want to in.

I am just Truly Thankful this morning!! This life I have isn’t easy, it’s not perfect. There is a lot we don’t or can’t buy (buying a house definitely pushes the budget). But We have all we need and I know God has been faithful to my family. He has provided all we needed. All we need to have a delighted heart and soul.

So even though I need mittens to take the puppy out in the mornings now, and this is a true shift and change for me. I don’t mind. I like that I was pushed out of the comfort of what I had become used too. Pushed to remember things I grew up with. Reminded of how much I really enjoyed that stuff I grew up with.

The country slower pace of life. The fresh air without being in the midst of bustling city life, (though I am glad I can drive less then ten minutes and have that stuff!). The beauty of a different type of nature.

I truly love where we live now. It’s not Hawaii for sure. I know I will dream of being back on the beaches, smelling the salty air and floral notes blowing in the trade winds. I really can see us being here and settling roots here for a while. That makes me thankful.

What About Wednesday: Laura’s October Sketch Challenge

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!!

It’s officially Autumn, I have had a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte and this week I made pumpkin soup. I make this soup every fall. It doesn’t feel like fall without it. Boy, did it taste so delicious too. Perfect for the chilly and cloudy days we have been having this week.

The Crafty Maven Getaway Stash It Monday

Aloha!!

It’s definitely feeling like Autumn here this week. low to mid 60s during the day, lots of clouds are rolling in and the leaves in my yard are really start to change their color. It is so nice to have this season changing, but it is also hard to get used too as well. There are moments i sit and think, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was in Hawaii. Not Cold!! I have a feeling I will have that feeling many times this season and next!!

I wanted to get on real quick today and share with you the layout and video I posted for Stash It Monday.

I love looking at all my scraps!! They are just so pretty. Sitting in the drawer that is overflowing. I pulled out a few pieces that I thought went with the pastel inspiration piece.

I pulled some older Dear Lizzy and some scraps from a past scraptastic kit and went to town.
