SpiegelMom Scraps September Blog Hop

Aloha!!

You may have come from Suzanna’s Blog, if so Welcome!! If not, you need to get over there and check out her amazing layout!!

It has been forever since the Sparklers have gotten together and had a hop. I kinda missed it. I love spending a quiet (even if the quiet is in my head with coffee to dull the  sounds of children asking for their morning needs. See my kids still are on summer break. So mornings are definitely not all that quiet in my house.)

Like all the SpiegelMom Scraps blog hops I have joined in, I will list the line up down below.  There are a lot of us, so I will try my best to keep it simple and short with tons of pictures. That is my favorite part of the hops, if I am being honest. I love being inspired before I have even gotten started for the day.

Follow the hop and comment on all the blogs for a chance at to win a prize of the new September release of sequins. The winner will be picked and notified on September 2.

This month our theme as a group is Artsy Fartsy and all the sequins are designed to match different famous art works. Here is a look at the sequins released this month. They are gorgeous and our very own Lisa helped design some of them.

IMG_0255.jpg

Lately I have going back to my roots. If you have followed me throughout my scrapping journey, you know I have fully embraced the mixed media trend in scrapbooking. In fact I credit a lot of my artsy tendencies on my family. My great grandmother was really artsy, I grew up seeing her floral paintings around our house. My grandmother also dabbled in art and drew and painted a fireplace in our house as an accent wall. My mother has played with watercolors, painting lots of gorgeous Hawaiian sunsets. Playing with paints helps me really dig into the inspiration I need. It refreshes me.

I will admit though sometimes it takes a while to create these “works of art”. There is lots of drying time, getting over the fear of the blank slate, and just figuring out what you want to convey on the page you are creating. Sometimes pages come together really fast and easy. It seems the paint flows with the ideas. Other times you take you page one step at a time. Taking days to finish all the little layers you add to create interest on your page, and then you add pictures and embellishments.

I love this journey though. It truly has made me a better scrapbooker. And I have loved coming back to my roots.

Let’s talk about this layout I made for today.

IMG_0350

Because I knew this month was all about art, I will wanted to embrace it.  I started out my scrapbooking layout blank, like it was an art journal type of page. Just letting my products guide me into a direction. This means I had no idea what photos I would end up scrapping or what story I wanted to tell.

IMG_0336

I built some wash layers with watered down Shimmerz sprays. I used Jeni B Bleu, Razzle-dazzle berry, and Mama Sings the Blues sprays. They all have different amounts of shimmer and I love how they mixed together to on my Amercian Crafts White Card Stock.

IMG_0338

I mixed some of the Razzle-dazzle berry spray with some acrylic matte, which helps seal in the spray so it doesn’t blend and mix with my next layer. It changes the spray a bit too so that it is intensified on the card stock. This step definitely needs to dry overnight.

I am still very much entranced with purple tones!! I don’t know what it is about the color but I am all about purple. I don’t have the Shimmerz purple acritonez. Acritonez, are acrylic paints with a primer in them. They are so nice for mixed media that is layered. It isn’t as opaque as regular acrylic paint so you can still see bits of other mixed you may have under it. I like this on projects like what I am doing. I don’t want all that work I did under to disappear, I want to enhance it. I mixed the pinkadelic and the in the navy Acritonez together to make some different shades of purples. Let me tell you this was so much fun!!

IMG_0348

I applied this layer with my palette knife. I used this layer as a base to doodle on. I used a variety of paint marker pens from my stash. I drew some flowers and leaves. This is my favorite part of the layout. I am so glad it worked because it could have been a disaster. This is one of the things about mixed media. You have to be brave. Many times you make decisions when you could ruin your work so far. If you don’t take the leap you won’t get the big pay off at the end though.

IMG_0342

This is what you are working for too, with mixed media and art journalling. This fact that all these little steps will come together and have this big pay off.

I knew this layout needed to make statement. I am not gonna lie, I still had no idea where I was going with my page from here. I scoured the silhouette store for something that popped out to me. A sentiment that fit with this spread, that I could make my own. Finally I found the perfect one. The part that made me chuckle was it brought me back to SpiegelMom Scraps too. I love how this can happen too. In this journey we travel in scrapbook page making we finally come full circle.

IMG_0344.jpg

I found a sentiment that said snails & puppy dog tails. I made it huge so I could stitch around it one I cut it out on my silhouette. I wanted it to cover most of my layout. I want this phrase to be what you see. I also added an alpha with this title/sentiment that said Sequins. It would be perfect for the story I was now going to tell with this page.

IMG_0341

I printed out two very small photos. I usually like to use bigger images on my layout, but this just seemed to call for something small. I had two photos I wanted to use too. They are my two younger children Cayden and Samuel. They are holding up Spiegelmom Scraps glassine bags filled with sugar and spice and a bit of small sequins. They wanted them because they had been reading nursery rhymes and read the little girls and little boys are made of nurses rhyme. They want to create their own mix to create the perfect little girl and boy. The silly little things our kids do, I love their innocence they still have. I am glad I have been able to protect this a bit. Sam was quite upset that boys were made from snakes, snails and puppy dog tales and insisted I use his sisters mix because it was better for making the perfect boy. I told him I added a bit of pepper for a dash of fire and spiciness that makes boys a bit different. Just retelling this story it makes me smile. They were so cute. I wish I could keep them this age forever!! There scene of exploring and discovery is so fun to watch.

IMG_0343

After I stitched the sentiment, which took a while, but so worth it!! Thank goodness for Netflix when it comes to hand stitching. I used a variety of purple, teal, copper thread and then I added some of the pink and white baker’s twine from the store. I wanted to have a bit of color to match the colors I used on the background.

IMG_0340

After adding my photos with a bit of layers. I lightly embellished my layout. I added some of the Cocoa Vanilla Wild at Heart die cuts, I knew all the purple would work perfect with my colors. I also knew the florals would help tie in my own floral I doodled on the bottom of my layout.

I used some of the Love U Lots white felt hearts with some of the chunky cork hearts around the layout. I love mixing all these textures throughout my layouts for interest.

IMG_0347

I finished off with sequins, because I just don’t feel a layout is finished without them. I used the Painted Gardens sequins from the September Release. I also added a few Stargazer sequins. I wanted a touch of a clear sequin to reflect of the background. These were perfect for this layout!!

You can watch me create this layout on my personal Youtube.

Here is a final look at my layout. It is so much fun. I will end up typing out my journaling and adding it to the backside of my layout. It will also help cover up all the stitching too.

Day 2/100: Dog Days of Summer

Aloha!!

This week has been super hot, especially for here. Today it was in the low 90s and muggy, and hazy and gross. No clouds, all sun. It is HOT. all we want to do is stay inside, close the blinds and stay cool in the AC.

Even the dog!!

I mean look at this pup. She is so spoiled. cuddling on the couch next to me as I edit photos and work on editing a process video while watching Top Chef.

Meanwhile, the cat.

Thinks my craft room, is her palace.

What you may not know is my craft room is a really a screened in porch, and is a tad bit warm today because of the heat. It is semi cooled from the house, but on a day like today, when the sun is blasting in, it has gotten really hot by the afternoon. I literacy had to pick up her big fat butt and make her get inside where the AC is. She is the Queen of the house.

I love these spoiled rotten animals though.  They really have made this house our home. They make sitting on the couch watching Hulu, nice and relaxing with the purr of contentment.

So even though it’s too hot to scrap in my scrap room at my desk, and I am chilling at the dining room table tonight to feed my creative nature. My story is about the little things that can turn your day around.

Watching my puppy jump through the cool water sprinkler as I water my dying lawn. Hearing my kids make dinosaur sounds from downstairs where their playroom is.

It’s the little things that make our days perfect.

I love the little moments.

Also here is a fun little sneak peek of what I was creating today!!

100 Days Project

Aloha!!

My scrappy Friends, this summer is whizzing by. It’s August already and I have been in my “new” house for a year already. Crazy Stuff.

Online at one of my favorite groups The Scrap Gals many of crafters are coming together and challenging themselves and doing a 100 day project. I am joining in on this challenge/project. Last month I joined in a a video a day challenge with a bunch of my Youtube friends. It was so much fun and really pushed me to be creative everyday. Even if I didn’t end up posting something everyday.

I believe throughout the month of July I posted 25 or so videos on Youtube, whether it was my channel or Design Team Youtube Channels that I design for. That is really awesome and amazing. I really feel like I was able to get my creative juices flowing this month and now I am on a roll. I would love to keep some of that going.

My goals for this 100 day period, is to finish my class so that is up and launching. I really thought I could get that done, int he spring. With my husband gone for work, but it ended up I am not a great single mom, and working mom. LOL. My puppy also decided she didn’t like the change and was more needy than my kids. The class is slow going but my goal is to work on it every every this month and hopefully by the 100 it will be launched. Ready to go!!

I also want to focus on personal blogging. I used to do this a bit more when I made it a habit of blogging everyday for The Crafty Maven Getaway and just when I had more DT work that required me to blog. It has been nice to take the time off from blogging and more to videos, which I really enjoy posting. The feedback is there. But there is just something about the blogging relationship I feel like you build when you blog regularly.

I am going to post something everyday. That is my goal. I would love to post a photo and talk about that a little. nothing really complex but a way for you to get to know me more.

I also really want to play more mixed media wise. I have been having a blast playing in my Traveler’s Notebook and getting to know my products more. I want to do that more.

This is my 100 days goal. I may not be perfect, I know I have some really busy days coming up, but I also know I really want to complete and accomplish something different. I want to be more creative and play more. I feel like this will help me in the teams I am on but also help me to have more fun and enjoy the process more.

So today>>>

Day 1

IMG_8973.JPG

IMG_8970.JPG

These are not the best photos. It is one of the many things I want to really focus on, taking and getting better photos.

This Dahlia is the first dahlia of the season though. This makes me so happy. I have waited all year for this. It is one of the biggest surprises of this new house. The Dahlia’s!! They are big and gorgeous. I want all the colors in my yard!!

This Dahlia though I can’t claim as my own. It’s actually from our neighbors. They are the sweetest people. They give my girls flowers picked from their beautiful garden all the time. It makes my heart melt. When someone is just kind to your kids. Treat them like they are own grandkids. It really means a lot.

Being in the military you get a lot of neighbors. Some are amazing and life changing. Some you really wish you could send away or move yourself. You learn to deal with it and be the best person you can be anyway.

I really love that my girls can know what a good neighbor is like. They can have conversations about their favorite toys and share smiles as they play horses. It’s this childhood that will be in their memory and they can really have fond memories of.

So this Dahlia isn’t just a flower. It is so much more. More than I really could type out in words, so I am not really going to try. I am gonna put that flower where we all can see it and enjoy it.

I hope you all join me throughout these next 100 days. I hope you choose to do something for 100 days and share it.

SpiegelMom Scraps Design Team: Stitching in your Traveler’s Notebook

Aloha!!!

I am stitching in my Traveler’s Notebook. I am creating texture, using lots of layers.

IMG_8371.jpg

Yes, I even stitched on my photo. It looks so cool too.

IMG_8368

I added this small cluster on the bottom of the photo with the title. I used different tile alphas for a fun element. mixing chipboard from Maggie Holmes and a mix of Fairy Garden and Sparkle Power sequins together.

IMG_8373

This phrase strip at the top with more sequins really helps draw your eye down the side at all the stitching and this gorgeous photo of Mt. Rainer.

IMG_8375.jpg

I can never get tired of this view!! It is amazing!! And this view is just down my street. I feel lucky that I can see this beauty all the time, unless it’s cloudy. the grandeur of Mt. Rainer is so palpable when you see it in person. As a person you feel so small, that we are only a small part of this whole wide world!! Some Deep Stuff, right?!

IMG_8370.jpg

I love mixing an old Maggie Holmes sticker from Open Book with the Chasing Dreams products. Look at all this great stitching. I stitched all these layers on the American Crafts White Cardstock and then used red line double stick tape to adhere it to the inside of my insert.

IMG_8364.jpg

For the top page, I added vellum with gold roses over the patterned paper. I love seeing all that pattern through the hazy vellum. All these layers were stitched on as well.

IMG_8374.jpg

I added sequins inside the top layer to make a shaker pocket layer. I used the same mix of Fairy Garden and Sparkle Power.

IMG_8366.jpg

I layered some of the flat stickers and the puffy stickers on top with some sequins. You just can’t have enough sequins. I adhere them with Tombow Mono Multi glue.

All the texture on this spread makes me so happy!! You can watch my process video on the SpiegelMom Scraps Youtube Channel or below:

Now for the fun part where I get to show you what I made.
I am using the Main July Pool Party Kit. It features Elle’s Studio Live.Laugh.Love Collection. Really Bright and Colorful, I really wanted to highlight that.
Here are some close ups and see all the goodness,
CK Pep Rally July Sneak Peek
I decided that I wanted to use the labels from the branding strip. I color matched them with this stripped pattern paper. I popped them up on dimensional foam to add interest.
IMG_7984
I used plain white card stock so that I could add media on the background and have it work with all the colors from the July Main Kit.
IMG_7985
I used multiple photos on this layout. My photos were also really bright. Using the white background really made all the color pop. This photo of a parrot fish is so cool. These pictures were taken at our local Zoo.
IMG_7987
I created a cut file with my own brush script and scanned it into my computer. It is really easy and really fun. This title is perfect and created specially for this layout. “One Man’s Trash is another’s Art.”
IMG_7988
This trash was taken right from Puget Sound and collected, then sorted and used to create these really cool and huge sculptures of the zoo’s wildlife. See my kid’s standing under the big Puffin. That is my kid’s favorite zoo animal. I used a pen to doodle sketch faux stitching lines outlining the cut file. I also colored around the cut file with different colored markers to match the colors near them.
This blue marker looks really cool with the blue water color peeking from under the photo’s edges.
IMG_7990
I made sure to use puffy stickers and enamel dots in the same color area. I really wanted a look almost similar to how Irit Landgraf gets on her layouts.
IMG_7991
IMG_7993
I finished off with Black color shine drops to make the color pop more. This layout is one of my favorites this summer. I love how the story and the photos, and the collection really work together to document my own story.
Here is one final look at this layout.

Clique Kits July Challenge

ck-jul17-mainkit_2_orig.jpg

Aloha!!

Today over at the Clique Kits Blog we are sharing the July Challenge. The theme this month is Anything Goes. We are also using up some of our Add On products from the Clique Kits Store.

It is always fun for me to add old stash with my new stuff. It helps me get excited about using all the product I have so I make good use out of it.

This is the layout I made using both the Main Pool Party July Kit featuring the Live Laugh Love Collection by Elle’s Studio and the Traveler’s Notebook Pool Party July Kit featuring Ain’t Life Grand by Pretty Little Studio.

CK Anything Goes Change is in the hair.jpg

This mixed media layout was so fun to make. I mixed my watercolors with my gelatos around many various sized circles to get a really cool look. I used some Shimmerz Dazzlerz and purple acrylic paint with my finger to help add some more pink around the circles. I doodled around each of the circles to make them pop. I also used a stamp set from Pink Fresh Studios that I got as an add on. there are some circle elements as well as some fun phrases.

IMG_7691.jpg

I scattered some of the acrylic Elle’s Studio pieces in the circles. I added a ton of enamel dots, some were from this month’s kit but some were from last month’s kit too.  I wished I could have used the Bella Blvd Stars though too.

IMG_7692.jpg

By adding the acetate paper in the inside the main circle it really added some extra color to this already colorful layout. I really just wanted this layout to be really playful. I am documenting when I colored my hair dark purple last month. I love that I can be really playful with my hair and have a little fun. I love expressing myself through hair colors and things I wear.

IMG_7685.jpg

I used the 4×6 cards for my layers behind the photo. By keeping them really natural it helped my photo really stand out.

IMG_7686.jpg

I added the title in a semi circle around the big circle. I did a play on words with the title. I wrote Change is in the hair instead of Change is in the air. I used the Copper Pink Fresh Studio Alpha’s from the June Kit.

IMG_7690.jpg

Lastly I scattered some die cuts from the main kit. I also added a Maggie Holmes fringe heart near my title. I love the idea of the butterfly transforming like I am transforming my look to fit my personality. These butterflies are so beautiful too.

IMG_7694.jpg

I hope you head over to the Clique Kits Blog and see what the other Design Team Members have made with their Kits and Add ons for the July Challenge. I hope you play along too. You have all month to get your layout or project done and tag us.

Scrapping Wonders DT: Watercolor Insert Spread

19225780_10213139742267581_2547105321077404588_n.jpg

Aloha!!

I was asked to join the Scrapping Wonders DT. I have been loving playing around in my own Traveler’s Notebooks so I said yes. Frankly I am honored to be asked!! I know I just like to play around in my Notebook’s. It is a way to to have fun and learn.

Today I am sharing a Watercolor spread in the Watercolor Insert In the Scrapping Wonders Etsy shop.

I wanted to create a scene with Watercolors and some other mixed media on one side of the double page.

IMG_7165

I also wanted a full page sized Black and White photo on the other side. I really wanted it to feel like we were stepping back in time. That is because when walking down this street in Tacoma makes you feel. All the old brick style building. The cobblestone streets, the train tacks that run straight through the street. You feel like time stood still for a minute.

IMG_7161

I Used watercolor brush script to create a title for the spread I made. I really didn’t feel the need to  do a ton of journaling. I will probably make a full size layout of the photo in color, so I am not worried about telling the story in words. I wanted to create a feeling. Almost retelling history.

IMG_7162

For the sidewalk area I used Shimmerz paste and sprays, watercolor and Gold texture luxe to get that feel of a walked on street or side walk. I wanted it to feel old and I wanted to see the texture like you see when you are really walking on the sidewalk.

IMG_7163

I built little clusters of embellishments in the colors I used on my spread to help tie everything together. It is the scrapbooker in me that needs to add a photo and paper to my spread.

IMG_7164

I love the Arrival tag, especially since this building up ahead is Union Station. I wonder how many arrival stamps have been added to people’s papers and luggage?!

IMG_7159

Here is a final look at my spread. I am really happy with how it turned out, It really was a learning process. To see my process head over to Youtube or watch below..

I hope you were Inspired try something different or tell your story a little different, using a different approach.  Look forward to seeing more Traveler’s Notebook spread in the future!!
